A thief who stole welding cables from Malta Shipyards in May 2008 has been given a suspended jail term after a magistrate declared that there was direct and circumstantial evidence linking him to the crime.

Gilbert Agius, 38, of Żejtun stole the cables from dock number two and could not explain to the police how he had marks on his shoulders which matched the shape of the cables. He also could not explain how as a plasterer he needed welding cables, Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona said.

Mr Agius was given a six month jail term suspended for two years.

Police Inspector Jesmond Borg prosecuted.
