A young man of 18 was injured by a shot from an air rifle at a Naxxar residence yesterday evening.

The police said that the rifle was allegedly being handled by a 16-year-old boy from Siġġiewi. Sources said the police were treating the shooting as accidental.

The incident took place in Telecommunications Street at about 6.30 p.m.

The injured man, from Naxxar, was first taken to the Mosta Health Centre where he was certified to be suffering from injuries of a grievous nature and was later transferred to Mater Dei Hospital for more specialised treatment.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke is holding an inquiry as the police probe the circumstances of the shooting .
