Theatre students, actors and enthusiasts are invited to attend a two-session workshop with the world-renowned Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Shakespeare’s Globe is a unique international resource dedicated to exploring Shakespeare’s work and the playhouse for which he and others wrote

The workshops offer a unique opportunity to work with members from the UK company, which has been acclaimed as “London’s most informal and genuinely popular theatre” (The Independent, June 2010).

The workshop will form part of this year’s edition of the Malta Arts Festival, a showcase of top-quality events held annually in Valletta in summer.

Listed by the UK Sunday Times Travel section on its ‘Top 10 opera, dance and arts festivals’ taking place across Europe in 2011, the Malta Arts Festival has achieved international recognition since it first started out eight years ago.

The eighth edition of the festival, which will be held between June 30 and July 14, aims to encourage local and foreign artists and performers side by side. With a varied programme of performance, music, dance and visual arts, it offers a broad range of genres and artistic forms.

Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare’s Globe is a unique international resource dedicated to exploring The Bard’s work and the playhouse for which he and others wrote. Together, Globe Theatre, Globe Exhibition & Tour and Globe Education strive to further the experience and international understanding of Shakespeare in performance.

For the last five years Globe Theatre on Tour have taken productions to castles, festivals, parks and town squares around the world. Previous productions have included Henry V, Anne Boleyn, As You Like It and Hamlet (2012). This summer, they will perform The Taming of the Shrew, one of Shakespeare’s first comedies, as part of the Malta Arts Festival, on July 3 and 4.

Performed on an Elizabethan-style stage with an all-female cast, a small troupe of travelling players will breathe new life into Shakespeare’s outrageous comedy.

The production stars one of theatre’s great screwball double acts, a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to its controversial conclusion.

The Shakespeare Workshop will consist of two sessions on July 2 and 4. A directing workshop with Joe Murphy will be held on July 2 between 2 and 4pm.

An acting workshop with members of the company will be held on July 4 between noon and 1pm and 1pm to 2pm. The workshops will be held at M Space, Msida.

Places are on a first-come, first-served basis and the workshop is limited to a maximum of 15 people per session.

Costs are €15 per session or €25 for both.

Bookings can be made by sending an e-mail to justin.galea@maltaculture.com.
