A DJ who was twice convicted of engaging in sexual activities with minors at his teen parties said he has organised “countless” other events attracting 17-year-old girls, as another claim of wrongdoing surfaced yesterday.

“I have done nothing wrong. As far as I am concerned I am not a sex offender... I shouldn’t be on any sex offender list,” Joel Caruana, 24, told The Sunday Times of Malta.

Mr Caruana has been on the sex offenders list since he was sentenced to a 10-month prison term, suspended for two years, for engaging in sexual acts with a 13-year-old girl in 2010.

The DJ and party organiser also received a second suspended jail term after he was pictured cupping the breast of a 14-year-old girl at one of his contentious ‘I Love Music’ teen parties three years later.

Mr Caruana was hazy about the ages of the young girls he assaulted and insisted he did nothing to which they had not consented.

“If I had a photo taken pretending to grab a girl’s breast, is that so bad? If I had ulterior intentions do you think I would have done it in front of a camera?” he asked’

“Wouldn’t you go somewhere more private where no one can see you, like everyone else does?” Mr Caruana said. He shrugged off the allegations that he was sexually attracted to underage girls. “No I am definitely not attracted to minors.

“Whatever happened in the past does not make me a sex offender. It’s all been blown out of proportion,” he said, as he fidgeted with his large-faced wrist watch and bright red baseball cap.

Yesterday, another teenage girl made claims against Mr Caruana on social media, which he told this newspaper he refutes and would in fact be seeking legal advice on the matter.

If I had a photo taken pretending to grab a girl’s breast – is that so bad?

Mr Caruana organised a party last night attracting girls as young as 17.

The event themed ‘Girls Invasion’ was held at a Paceville club and came under scathing criticism on social media after promotion photos featured girls with an overtly youthful appearance.

Asked if the girls were all adults, Mr Caruana said they were all “old enough to enter clubs” – 17. He insisted he no longer hosts parties targeting girls as young as 13, and instead has limited himself to events for those aged 17 and over.

Mr Caruana’s parties were first flagged by this newspaper four years ago after photos uploaded to Facebook showed unsavoury interaction between men in their 20s and girls as young as 12.

The photos also showed groups of girls dancing in lingerie and mimicking erotic dancers. One of the girls, aged 15, claimed she had been paid €10 to dance.

Following the newspaper’s reports, the parties had been banned from nightclubs until new regulations were drafted by a special working group involving several authorities.

“I was sentenced but that doesn’t mean that since 2010 I haven’t held any events. On the contrary, I’ve organised loads – I can’t even count how many – nearly every weekend, including one-off summer events, boat parties, you name it,” he said.
