Much as I admire Simone Mizzi’s attitude writing on behalf of Din l-Art Ħelwa on the protection of Malta’s finest locations from further exploitation (An Opportunity To Show We Care, March 31), her reasoning only takes into consideration developers, planners and decision-makers.

As she pleads with delicate tenacity for them to show they care about the islands’ remaining landscape, she barely references the people she defines as Malta’s richest land owner: the government.

Enough words have been written about their most obvious offence but surely these apparently responsible decision-makers and protectors of our national well-being should still be chastised for committing themselves to the barbaric destruction of the walls of Valletta and the grossly unsympathetic, self-aggrandising creation of a new Parliament built to banal design when there are other more appropriate, less intrusive sites under their control, like Fort St Elmo and St Luke’s Hospital.

This crime brings no benefits to Valletta’s residents, the Maltese proud of the city’s heritage or the tourists who come to be enveloped in our historical heritage.

If our unimpeachable government fails to lead by example, why should we expect any other developer of property to behave any differently?
