Last month was the second hottest September on record since 1924 as the mercury soared to 34°C, according to the Meteorological Office.

The average air temperature was 26.3°C, which is 1.6°C more than average.

The hottest day coincided with Malta’s 50th anniversary of Independence, September 21, when the temperature hit 34.6°C. The coolest was September 30 at 19.2°C.

Only a total of 0.2 mm of rain was measured, a fraction of the norm of 58.1 mm.
