A security guard with public transport provider Arriva yesterday admitted to stealing 440 litres of diesel from the depot he was meant to be protecting in Floriana.

Jason Ellul, 36, from Għaxaq, together with two other men who have yet to be arraigned, had stolen a total of 1,300 litres of fuel, which was split between them and Mr Ellul made off with 440 litres, Police Inspector Daniel Zammit said yesterday.

Mr Ellul was sacked after the theft.

Defence counsel Franco Debono told Magistrate Francesco Depasquale that his client was a first-time offender, admitted at an early stage of the proceed-ings and could pay for the fuel stolen.

The magistrate conditionally discharged Mr Ellul for three years and warned him of the consequences of committing a crime during this period.
