The Royal Malta Yacht Club hosted the second race from the Winter Series Coastal Races in light south easterly breeze of 10 to 14 knots, last weekend.

Five boats undertook a course that took them past the Valletta fairway buoy, then south to the outer Munxar east cardinal mark and on to the halfway mark, the Bengħajsa mark and back to finish off in Marsamxett Harbour.

The leg up to Munxar proved to be quite a balanced beat to windward. The reach to Bengħajsa and back was fast and the run to fairway also.

The fleet kept close throughout but it was an exciting finish between Xpresso, Lartista and Kon Tiki (who finished in that order) much to the joy of the spectators who had gathered to follow the proceedings from the terrace at the club’s headquarters  in Ta’ Xbiex.

Similar conditions had met the fleet at the first race of the series which took place last month.

Race result: 1. Xpresso (Sean Borg); 2. Lartista (Anton Calleja); 3. Kon Tiki (Ferdinand Grech).

The Royal Malta Yacht Club is now gearing up for this month’s St Patrick’s Weekend Regatta which is being organised in conjunction with the Embassy of the Republic of Ireland in Malta.

Events get underway on March 17 with a race briefing at the club.
