David Borg, a former aide of Joseph Muscat when he was an MEP, landed a full-time consultancy job with the Government barely five months after being appointed non-executive chairman of Wasteserv.
Mr Borg was handed the role within the Economy Ministry, receiving an annual salary of €33,853 and an additional €4,659 car allowance. Combined with his post at Wasteserv this adds up to an annual income in the region of €60,000.
In reply to a Parliamentary Question on October 16, Economy Minister Chris Cardona had said that since March four consultants were engaged, of whom three were on a full-time basis.
He named the three as Labour MP Silvio Schembri, Nadine Sant, a former barrister in the UK, and Mr Borg. However, he made no reference to Mr Borg’s post at Wasteserv.
The fact that they are the same person was confirmed yesterday by an Economy Ministry spokesman in reply to questions sent by Times of Malta.
Package is significantly below that of his predecesso
Contacted by this newspaper, the Environment Ministry, which is directly responsible for Wasteserv, said Mr Borg had an annual salary of €16,000, a car allowance of €4,658 and a communications allowance which included free telephony and internet.
The spokesman also emphasised that Mr Borg’s package is significantly below that of his predecessor, Benedict Farrugia, whose salary including perks was €33,078.70.
