The latest report on Fr René Cilia’s fatal accident (November 8) made me shudder. Forgetting to buckle up must have been an oversight but all I keep thinking about is how he was ‘shot’ point blank by a bullet the size of a small plate.

In a vehicle we call it an airbag. Combined with a seatbelt, being a recommended distance from the steering wheel and having your hands at the nine and two (ten and three better) position, airbags are life-savers. Take one of those requirements out of the equation and serious injury or death will be inevitable in a head-on collision.

We cannot bring the beloved priest back. His tragic death would not be in vain if either from the altar or through some other form of public awareness/education, drivers are reminded about safe driving habits.
