The wanted man who jumped into the sea to evade police was yesterday jailed for nine months and ordered to make good on personal guarantees amounting to €21,000.

If Jeffrey Cassar, 29, from Mosta, does not pay the guarantees he will have to spend a further 18 months behind bars.

Mr Cassar, who was wanted by the police, was spotted in Buġibba on Sunday. Officers went to investigate, and when he realised what was happening, Mr Cassar jumped from the balcony of the apartment he was staying in on to a neighbouring flat, causing some damage.

He then escaped on foot and at one point jumped into the sea.

But the police surrounded the area and caught him in Kennedy Grove.

Mr Cassar yesterday pleaded guilty to breaching bail in three separate cases, disobeying the orders of Police Inspector Joseph Busuttil, causing damage to a flat and relapsing.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale sentenced him to jail and ordered that the personal guarantees he made in three separate cases, amounting to €21,000, be paid immediately.

Lawyer Veronique Dalli appeared for Mr Cassar. Police Inspector Josric Mifsud and Mr Busuttil prosecuted.
