A countryside clean-up, organised by the Qrendi Scout Group in collaboration with Qrendi local council, recently took place in Ħal-Lewq, limits of Qrendi.

About 20 scouts and 10 younger cub scouts participated in the activity as part of the Scout Group’s Eco Centre programme, which aims to create awareness on people’s irresponsible behaviour through illegal disposal of bulky refuse.

Within a relatively short time, the Qrendi Scouts managed to collect and dispose of several 45-gallon drums, a fridge, a freezer, geysers, several computers, a photocopier, tyres, a complete bathroom suite, a rabbit cage, barbed wire, a steel locker, several mattresses, TV sets and a table.

“It is most distressing to find such items disposed of in our countryside when the council offers an efficient bulky refuse collection service and a bring-in site only a short distance away,” explained Qrendi Eco Centre secretary Mireille Cutajar.

The Eco Centre members thanked the local farmers who also took time off from their chores and helped the scouts in the exercise.
