Duo Aulos (flautists Laura Cioffi & Clara Galea) and the Edinburgh Napier Flute Ensemble will be presenting Flûtes en Vacance, three concerts that focus on flute music, bringing together Maltese and Scottish performers and composers, thanks to the generosity of the Napier Student Initiative Grant.

The Napier ensemble consists of six flute students currently reading for a BMus at Edinburgh Napier University, with Andrea Kuypers as their tutor.

The ensemble consists of three Scottish flautists (Rebekah Donn, Holly Thomson and Michael Ready), two Maltese flautists (Laura Cioffi and Clara Galea) and a Polish flautist (Kinga Zaborowska).

The ensemble has performed together in Edinburgh, Glasgow and in Liverpool. This is their first venture outside the UK as a group.

The first concert will feature Duo Aulos with Gisèle Grima performing works for two flutes and piano by Giacometti, Clarke, Doppler, Damase and Gaubert. All three performers are Ian Tomlin scholars.

The second concert takes place at the Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo de la Salle where the Napier Flute Ensemble present a programme ranging from classic arrangements to contemporary compositions to lighter more jazz-influenced pieces. Most of the music in the concert will receive its Maltese premiere in this concert.

Compositions include works by contemporary composers Reuben Pace, Stuart Murray Mitchell and Ken Dempster and there will also be a pre-concert talk at 6.45pm.

For the final concert, members of the Napier ensemble will perform as soloists accompanied by Ramona Zammit Formosa. This concert will focus parti-cularly on the potential of piccolo, alto flute and bass flutes as solo instruments.

The concerts take place on Wednesday, Friday and next Sunday in different locations. More information and tickets are available from St James Cavalier, Valletta, or online.
