Temperatures are expected to soar 4°C above the monthly average from tomorrow when the African anticyclone tormenting the Italian peninsula reaches Malta.

Fortunately, the mercury level is not expected to reach the 39°C registered yesterday in the Italian city of Brescia. Tuesday’s peak temperature for Malta was initially forecast to reach 38°C, but yesterday afternoon it was revised to 36°C.

The Meteorological Office yesterday said this is not classified as a heatwave since this would require temperatures to rise by at least 5°C above average for three consecutive days.

The average peak temperature for July is 32°C. The highest ever recorded during this month was 42.7°C on July 9, 1988. On July 11, last year, the maximum temperature on July 11 peaked at 40.7°C.
