The fourth round of the Assoċjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi (ASMK) Enduro National Championship was held last weekend at the Rock Cutting Quarry in Fawwara with the backing of Dunlop Tyres.

The race marshals laid out a three-kilometre track with varying surface conditions and challenges for the riders who numbered 18 in total. They raced in two categories.

In Class A, Gary Debono and Andre Scicluna, both riding KTM motorcycles, were the main protagonists in the pole position qualifiers.

In the opening heat, the two contenders were seriously challenged for the top placing by Elvin Debono, also on a KTM.

However, in the next heat, Gary Debono improved his run significantly and went on to close the day by winning the class in a best time of six minutes, 39.88 seconds.

Scicluna followed in second place in seven minutes, 15.70 seconds as Elvin Debono ultimately had to settle for third place when clocking eight minutes, 4.10 seconds.

An interesting race developed in Class B involving Matthew Gauci (Sherco), Joseph Scicluna (KTM) and Bernard Sammut (KTM).

Gauci had to deal with a front wheel problem during the qualifiers but still succeeded in clocking the best time to obtain pole position ahead of Scicluna and Sammut.

The top three riders upped the tempo in Heat One but Wayne Zahra (KTM) also entered the fray as he registered an impressive improvement in his times.

Tension reigned in Heat Two but Scicluna held tight to record the best time of 6:12.15, three seconds better than championship leader Gauci (6:15.13).

Third place went to Ian Scicluna (KTM) who came from behind to clock 6:44.49.

Sammut was fourth in 6:51.58 as Zahra settled for fifth in a time of 6:53.80.

The Overall Award, sponsored by Dunlop Tyres and presented for the first time this season, went to Joseph Scicluna.

Enduro section president Eddie Bonello handed out the trophies to the winners and confirmed that the next races will be held on March 6 at the ASMK circuit in Ta’ Qali.
