The photo of students who tried their hand at cricket (April 5) reminds me that I was invited to assist with the cricket coaching of several schools at the Marsa Sports Club. It consisted of a short spell of coaching followed by a round robin of games between all the schools competing.

Firstly, may I say that the organisation by the Marsa cricket officials was nothing short of excellent! However, the real stars of the show were the children themselves – totally committed, competitive and all interested in every aspect of the game. Even the teachers with them were very enthusiastic and competitive – very refreshing!

I hope for the future that the Maltese educationalists take this on board and try and fit in more “outdoor pursuits” within the school curriculum. A marvellous day, then, where children and cricket were the winners. It will certainly be my main topic of conversation on my return to England!

Thanks to all concerned.
