A 38-year-old school coach driver is in critical condition following a head-on collision with a large truck in Naxxar yesterday.

The crash occurred at around 2.20pm as the coach was taking students home from the St Nicholas boy’s secondary school. Four children from Forms I and II, all from Rabat, were taken to hospital with slight injuries caused by broken glass.

The coach, which forms part of the Koptaco transport cooperative, was on its way down the hill known as Telgħa tal-Għoqba, on the notoriously narrow road near the Giovanni Curmi Higher secondary school. The driver, from Dingli, had to be freed by the Civil Protection Department while the driver of the truck, a 46-year-old man from Mtarfa, escaped with slight injuries.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti is holding an inquiry while Police Inspector Josric Mifsud is investigating.
