A positive season for Malta forward Andrè Schembri comes to an end this evening when AC Omonia travel to Ermis Aradippou for their final league match.

Schembri has been one of the outstanding performers in Cyprus this year. He is second in the top scorers’ list with 17 goals, one behind AEL Limassol’s Monteiro and Apollo striker Gaston Sangoy.

AC Omonia’s last-day clash with Ermis Aradippou is a decider for fourth place as the two teams are level on 59 points.

Schembri’s future after this evening’s match is unclear as his two-year contract expires at the end of the month.

Unsurprisingly, AC Omonia are keen to hold on to Schembri but there have been widespread reports that his performances this season have caught the eye of a host of clubs outside Cyprus.

Schembri is keeping his cards close to his chest.

“My contract with AC Omonia runs out at the end of this month,” Schembri said.

“At the moment, I’m only focusing on our final league match.

“I think this has been one of my best seasons so far and for this I want to thank the club, for showing faith in me, and my team-mates and fans.

“AC Omonia are the biggest club in Cyprus. With regards to my future, I will review my options once the season is over.”

Schembri, who turns 28 on May 27, is expected to fly back to Malta this weekend for a short break before he resumes training with the national squad ahead of next month’s friendly against Gibraltar in Portugal.

Paus, Muscat options

André Paus is still one of the leading candidates to take charge of Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta.

The Dutch coach had been expected to make a decision on his future this week after capping his three-month spell with Valletta by leading the club to a league and cup double.

It is believed that Valletta have not given up hope of keeping Paus and discussions bet-ween the two parties are on-going.

Another contender for the coaching post at Valletta is Jesmond Zerafa who steered the City club to back-to-back titles during his two years in charge.

Meanwhile, it was also reported yesterday that three Italian clubs are monitoring the progress of Zach Muscat.

Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio wrote on his personal website that Serie B teams Novara, Carpi and Varese have been closely tracking the Birkirkara defender.

According to Di Marzio, Muscat left a positive impression on scouts who reportedly gauged his performance during a match for Malta U-21 last season.

Muscat has been a key member of the Malta U-21 squad for the past three years. The 20-year-old was also called up to the senior squad for the friendly international against Albania in March.

Elsewhere, Premier League club Naxxar Lions, who just managed to avoid the drop from the top flight last season, have opened talks with Argentine defender David Alejandro Reano and confirmed Brazilian forward Gilmar.

Defender Emmanuel Ibok Edet, who played for Floriana last season, has also agreed terms to join the Lions.
