Andrè SchembriAndrè Schembri has ended his disappointing spell with FSV Frankfurt after reaching an agreement with the German side to terminate his contract.
The Malta international forward joined the Bundesliga 2 club on a free transfer last summer after a positive two-year spell with Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.
Schembri, Omonia’s out-standing player last season in which he scored a total of 17 goals, felt the time was right to seek a bigger challenge in his career but things didn’t go according to plan in Germany as the 28-year-old struggled to hold down a regular place at FSV Frankfurt, managing just one goal in 11 appearances.
Uwe Stover, the director of sports at FSV Frankfurt, announced Schembri’s depar-ture in a statement on the club’s website.
“FSV Frankfurt have reached an agreement with Andrè Schembri to terminate his contract,” Stover said.
“During a meeting today (yesterday), Andrè expressed his desire to terminate his contract for personal reasons and we felt that it was the best solution for both sides.
“We wish Andrè all the best for the future.”
For his part, Schembri took to his Facebook page to confirm that he was leaving FSV Frankfurt.
“The spell with FSV Frankfurt comes to an end as personal problems pushed me to terminate my contract,” Schembri wrote.
“I must admit that these were extremely challenging months both from a personal level and football-wise.
“I guess this goes hand in hand with undertaking a professional footballer’s career and I am determined to pick myself up and keep pushing forward.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the FSV Frankfurt’s officials, team-mates, coaches and fans.
“On to the next!”
Despite his club struggles this season, Schembri has remained an influential player for the national team.
Last month, he was one of the team’s best performers as Malta managed to collect its first point in the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign after a 1-1 draw away to Bulgaria.
