Andre Schembri will continue with his playing career overseas when yesterday he agreed to join AC Omonia in the Cypriot first division after passing a medical and putting pen to paper on a two-year contract.

Schembri, Omonia’s 12th signing this summer, has already figured in four other leagues since 2008, but he is now keen to settle down and establish himself as a key player for the 20-times Cypriot champions.

“I’m pleased that I have finally settled my future for the next two years,” the 26-year-old told The Times yesterday.

“I had various offers from a number of Greek clubs but I felt that Omonia represented the best option for me as they are a very ambitious club who are aiming high this season.

“Their team manager was at Panionios last season and he knows what contribution I can give to the team and that made it easier for me to join them.

“My goal now is to win the coach’s trust and play regular first-team football. Hopefully, this will be the start of a long spell for me at Omonia.”

Last season, the former Hibernians and Marsaxlokk forward played in Greek for Panionios for whom he had 24 appearances and scored five goals.

Before, he had stints in Germany (E. Braunschweig and Carl Zeiss Jena) and Austria (Kartnen) and also played for former Hungary greats Feren-cvaros in 2010-11.

AC Omonia, winners of the domestic cup competition last season, are among the best supported teams in Cyprus and play at the GSP Stadium with a capacity of over 22,000.

Last season, they finished third in the championship behind AEL Limassol and Apoel.

Earlier this month, Omonia played in the Europa League third qualifying round but got eliminated on penalties by Serbia’s Red Star after two similar scoreless draws.
