The creation of sandy beaches in the south of the island is being studied to attract more holidaymakers to the area, according to Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis.

The area was disadvantaged compared to the choice of accommodation in the north of the island, he said.

Statistics confirmed the south had huge potential with Marsaxlokk attracting 45 per cent of tourists, followed by Cottonera (32 per cent), Żurrieq (23 per cent), Ħaġar Qim (19 per cent) and Marsascala (13 per cent).

Speaking during a consultative seminar, Dr Zammit Lewis said the area should be better promoted.
