San Ġwann beat Msida 2-0 in the first round match but this time they had to settle for a one-all draw which saw their outside chances for promotion unex-pectedly jolted.

San Ġwann joined Għarghur in fourth place on the 22-point mark but Msida are still battling in the lower end of the standings with 16 points.

The match was rather uneventful with very few scoring opportunities.

Msida were forced to make an early substitution when Martin Curtis cried out injured.

However, they opened the scoring on 21 minutes when Curtis’s replacement, Jorge Paiva, beat his marker and tap-ped the ball home.

On 33 minutes, from a free-kick taken by San Ġwann’s Cus-chieri, Attard’s volley flew just wide and five minutes later, Pace’s shot from the distance skimmed Msida’s woodwork.

San Ġwann again looked the better team in the second half and adopted more offensive tactics in their bid to score an equaliser.

They reached their goal ten minutes after the restart when the Msida goalkeeper failed to hold and Christopher Pace profited to place the ball at the back of the net.

Fifteen minutes from time, San Ġwann almost scored again.

After receiving an inviting ball from substitute Vella, Cuschieri saw his menacing shot ably punched into a corner by Msida goalkeeper Mallia.

The last opportunity of the match went Msida’s way but Xuereb’s effort from outside the area went slightly high over the bar.
