When: October 31
Where: Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh’s Beltane Fire Society presents the Samhuinn Festival every Halloween.
Starting at 9pm, it’s a spectacular pagan procession of music, folk dance, physical theatre and fire illuminating the city.
The celebration of Samhuinn, traditionally a time of revelry marking the summer’s end, is here turned into a macabre medieval pageant winding its way down the Royal Mile.
The festival is a modern retelling of a traditional Galoshins folk play, whereby the court of the summer king is vanquished by that of the winter king, whose own court chases out the remnants of the light half of the year.
And it’s not just Samhuinn that attracts visitors – Edinburgh is the perfect setting for a fun and spooky Halloween. Look out for fancy dress pub crawls and book yourself on one of the many ghost tours around the Old Town.
Don’t miss Mary King’s Close, an abandoned, underground street where tales of plague andmurder abound.
