It is so disappointing that our local (so-called) disc jockeys have such a limited knowledge of the great pop music of the last 50-odd years. Day in day out, they play the same tunes, some good some poor, but always repetitive. Why? Is their library severely restricted for financial reasons? Or are they simply unaware and ignorant of the incredible history of pop music, which after all is so easily accessible today on the Internet? Are they unaware that they have a duty to read up and study this subject and pass on this knowledge to their audience? This is after all their chosen profession.

The Christmas period probably shows up this deficiency more than any other. Always the same tunes ad nauseam. There are literally thousands of great Christmas songs to be found and played. Cannot they make the effort to look them up, listen to them, and try and be a bit more original in their choices to play on the radio?

It is such a great pity that these disc-jockeys are denying their audience the possibility of listening to so much great music and learning something about the songs, who wrote them, and in so many cases why they wrote them, for whom and so on.

It is a whole panorama of general interest to music lovers and sadly, we are one of the few countries which have such a poor general knowledge in this field, and I can only lay most of the blame on these “disc-jockeys” and their own lack of imagination and effort in their own chosen field. It is a disservice to the public.
