As much as the smooth transition following the last election brought out the best in Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, his handling of the citizenship scheme has brought out the worst in him, culminating in his speech in Parliament last Monday.
Muscat simply ignored the overwhelming European Parliament vote and public opinion. This reminds me of when in May 2012, then Labour MP Adrian Vassallo had accused the Labour leader of harbouring a “dictatorial” attitude when criticising him.
As Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil correctly suggested, it would be wise for Muscat to stop and think. Perhaps he will then have time to reflect on what the people, many of whom voted for him, have to say about the sale of citizenship.
