It drizzled yesterday morning but that need not dampen plans for a weekend at the beach though sailors should keep a watchful eye for rough seas, according to the weather forecast.

Early commuters might have noticed some low clouds across the island in the morning yesterday, which seemed to disappear during the day.

The clouds, at an altitude of about 700 feet, were spread over different areas, which would add up to half the sky over Malta, or half of what is referred to as the celestial dome.

But it was another layer of higher clouds that became thick enough to send raindrops trickling down, a Met Office spokesman said.

The next couple of days, however, should be dry even though the wind will become stronger.

While wind was forecast at force four to five yesterday, it blew at force five to six (rather strong to strong) throughout the day.

Rough seas are forecast for today, with two- to three-metre-high waves, and bathers and small boat owners should therefore be cautious.

The wind should calm down between tomorrow and Saturday, blowing at force three. On Sunday, it is set to be sunny and partly cloudy.

Discussing the unsettled weather, the spokesman referred to last weekend’s fog, noting that the last time fog was registered in July was in 2005.

Fog is usually expected during seasonal changes from winter to spring and autumn to winter but weather conditions could lead to fog outside those periods.

This was the second time this month that fog was registered. There is usually no fog in July, though this year it was observed on the 7th and the 27th.

This July was a bit cooler, windier and cloudier than the norm. The mean maximum temperature was 0.8˚C less than the usual 31.6˚C.
