A great number of drivers in Malta lack basic street awareness.

Too many are interested in what their radio is broadcasting and what billboards are selling. Some do not realise they are making use of a potentially fatal weapon. This makes life on the road more dangerous than it has to be and none are more vulnerable than cyclists. For this reason I would like to share some points which can make our roads safer for everyone.

Learn to share. The roads are meant for everyone.

Appreciate that cyclists are making one’s life easier by reducing congestion, pollution and parking problems.

Use indicators: We have not perfected the art of telepathy yet.

Commute can be made safer if one exercises caution and patience. Allow plenty of space to all road users and drive slowly on low visibility roads. Cyclists have as much right to claim the lane. Cycling in the gutter, with all the garbage and broken glass, will not give cyclists enough room to avoid obstacles. Next time you get behind the wheel, remember: You are not in traffic, you are traffic.
