Residents of Swieqi have long been complaining about the need of two or at least one small tunnel at the lower end of Swieqi Road adjacent to the tunnel used by all types of vehicles going in and out of Swieqi from that direction. It is a very dangerous spot and, to say the least, it is a fatal accident waiting to happen.

I even raised this subject when former home affairs minister Manwel Mallia visited Swieqi but Mario Fava, one of the two Labour councillors on the Swieqi local council, promptly butted in saying that, structurally, this was impossible because the road would cave in.

A question on the matter was tabled in Parliament.

It seems the project could be included in Transport Malta’s prospective projects list and that this depends on priorities and available funds.

So, according to the government, giving thousands of euros to consultants (sic) takes priority over people’s safety.

I beg to differ.
