It is with regret that I have to write about this subject again. However, although reluctantly, I have to say that Angele Calleja, when writing about this subject (July 25) is 100 per cent correct. I live in Anġlu Gatt Street and, in the corner mentioned by Ms Calleja, the situation is much worse at times than what is shown in the picture accompanying the letter.

... why... do people persist in breaking the law?- Emily Barbaro-Sant, Mosta

Another daily rubbish dump which needs to be looked into is Eucharistic Congress Road corner with Anġlu Gatt Street. Rubbish bags are put more than 12 hours earlier than collection time. On Saturdays, the situation is worse. Sometimes bags are put on this corner less than an hour after collection, meaning they are left there until the following Monday evening. Rubbish bags are also seen along Eucharistic Congress Road, more often than not accompanied by some bulky article, as early as 6.45 a.m.

As Ms Calleja rightly wrote, rubbish is collected during evenings, except on Fridays, recycling bags twice a week and bulky refuse almost on call. So, why, one rightly asks, do people persist in breaking the law? I am not going to suggest fixing CCTVs as it’s impossible to have them in every nook and corner of the village, but I have something else to suggest which I know worked out in another locality.

I suggest that the local council authorises someone to open up garbage bags placed in unlawful places. Surely something is found to identify the law breaker. Then action can be taken and the local council will show that they truly mean business.
