The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace has been voted the favourite television moment of 2011 in a new British poll.

Just over a quarter (26 per cent) of people polled picked the romantic moment from Kate and William’s wedding day.

It comfortably beat the next closest contender, the scene in I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here when a cockroach climbed up Fatima Whitbread’s nose, which got 14 per cent of the vote.

Other small screen moments that captured the nation’s imagination this year included Pippa Middleton’s appearance at the wedding, roly poly astrologer Russell Grant being fired out of a cannon during Strictly Come Dancing and Steve Coogan’s argument with former News of the World journalist Paul Mcmullan on Newsnight.

Researchers questioned 1,000 adults online for the poll which was carried out on behalf of Freeview.

A spokesman for the company said: “Over the last 12 months, viewers across the nation have been captivated by great TV drama, structured reality programmes, compelling soap storylines and, of course, the royal wedding.”
