A series of thefts from shops in Għajnsielem and Victoria were solved in Gozo following the arrest of a foreign couple caught breaking into a shop.

The police said the couple, a 37-year-old Belgian man and a 21-year-old Italian woman, were arrested shortly after they broke into an outlet in Victoria on Monday afternoon.

The couple came face-to-face with the owner and ran off but the shopkeeper ran after them. He met a traffic officer on the way and reported the incident.

The officer gave chase while calling for backup. Although the woman managed to get away, the man was arrested at a disused factory.

The woman was eventually identified and arrested yesterday. Their arrest led the police to solve seven theft cases. The couple will be arraigned in the coming days.
