Disciplinary action has been taken against a police sergeant who fired shots at a car that failed to stop at a police roadblock.

The incident happened on Monday at around 1.30am when a man driving towards Buġibba failed to stop at a police roadblock set up on the Coast Road. Police officers on site indicated to the driver to pull over but he refused and drove off, sources said.

A police sergeant on duty ran behind the car, took out his service weapon and fired two shots.

No one was injured, sources said.

Questions were sent to the police’s media section asking whether an internal inquiry was being held the actions of the police sergeant and whether the driver was arrested.“Disciplinary action against the police officer concerned is being taken,” the police said.

The police have also arrested, investigated and released a person on police bail in connection with this matter, the spokesman said.

When asked to explain the rules of engagement about the use of firearms, the police’s media unit said these were regulated by “internal guidelines”.
