Valletta and Luxol lock horns at the Corradino Sports Pavilion this evening (kick-off 20.00) in a match that gives the two teams an opportunity to claim the first honour of the season – the Super Cup.

Futsal competitions in the new 2016-17 campaign finally get under way today following weeks of speculation and uncertainty caused by a lack of venues for futsal games.

The Super Cup contest sees the Citizens, who were crowned league champions for the first time after a positive 2015-16 season, take on cup holders Luxol.

After a hectic pre-season, during which they played in the UEFA Futsal Cup, Valletta will be looking to start the domestic season on a high.

The champions retained the core of their title-winning squad with coach Clayton Felice also banking on several new signings, including Brazilian striker Raphinha and the experienced Chris Cardona, Gary Inguanez, Carlo Scicluna and goalkeeper Stefan Vella.

Luxol will be eager to make up for their upset in the play-offs where they were eliminated by Valletta.

In the off-season, they secured the services of Matthew Xerxen, Clint Mifsud, Giancarlo Sammut, Nicola del Re and Romania international Emil Andrei Raducu.

These are still early days to make a proper assessment of the two teams’ potential. However, judging by their latest acquisitions expect both Valletta and Luxol

to rank among the major contenders for the major honours this season.

In last year’s Super Cup, Luxol saw off the Citizens 9-5.
