Lies is the debut solo single from Rikki Lee, “a Maltese musician with an English background”, as he likes to call himself.

An unknown quantity on the local scene up until a year ago, Lee made his mark here as the voice of new arrivals, Gypsy Genes, whose two singles Red Hot Money and That Girl were regular features on the Maltese airwaves in 2013.

Born in Malta, Lee says his upbringing in London helped shape his musical predilections, although he has always been interested in new sounds and styles. As a member of signed UK band The 51/50s, he got to tour around Europe and even got a taste of UK chart success.

With music being such a big part of his life, it was therefore inevitable that upon moving back to Malta, the first thing he did was to look for a band.

Hooking up with Gypsy Genes gave him his first Maltese music experience, which he followed up with an appearance at last year’s Rockestra. He was also one of the singers on the 2013 Singing for Bay Kids song Today.

“The song Lies,” he says, “is based on my frustration with certain matters in the world, past and present.”

It marks the start of a new chapter in his career, with more to follow as he is currently working on his next release.
