Original gilding and polychrome marble effects on the altar dedicated to St John of God at Our Lady of Victory church in Valletta are being brought back to life thanks to a conservation project by Din l-Art Ħelwa.

The renowned Giuseppe Mantella team is supervising the restoration works.

Recent cleaning of several layers of inappropriate paint and centuries of grime revealed the original inscription over the altar in its gilt cartouche.

The decorative scheme being uncovered is believed to be the first one, dating back to the early 18th century.

Works are being sponsored by Alf. Mizzi and Sons Ltd, to mark its 100th anniversary.
