There is a lot to say for encouraging public speaking and the holding of debates in schools, as some correspondents have recently pointed out.

Even the most reluctant student and the least motivated child can be enticed to speak out on subjects which are of interest to him. Many students come to realise they too have a voice, they too can stand up to be counted.

Besides the obvious benefits of helping them express themselves better in that particular language and nurturing future leaders, there are other important considerations. Very importantly, such an activity boosts a young person’s self-confidence.

In debating and interacting with his peers in this way, a student will realise that the persuasiveness of an argument is strengthened and rendered more powerful when a speaker shows respect and tolerance for those who hold different opinions and that is a very important lesson in life.
