Christine Schembri Deguara is in the final stages of her sub-specialisation in reproductive medicine and minimal access surgery.

Dr Deguara holds a prestigious sub-specialisation training position in London, of which only a handful are issued in the UK every three years.

She has benefitted from this role having already completed three years of advanced laparoscopic training in central London’s top university hospitals including St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London, University College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.

Last year she completed a PhD in genetics and proteomics of endometriosis at Queen Mary University, an affiliate of the University of London and a Russell 20 university. For this work she was awarded an MGSS scholarship.

Identification of protein and miRNA expression profiles predicting the presence of endometriosis allowed her to work towards developing a non-invasive biomarker test for earlier identification and treatment of the disease and has aided in unlocking new methods of molecular targeting as treatment. Her research has enabled the diagnosis of potential novel therapeutics for this disease, reducing the morbidity of unnecessary surgery.

Dr Deguara has published various scholarly articles in the field of laparoscopy in a number of peer-reviewed journals.

She has also presented at international meetings, with some of her presentations receiving clinical excellence awards.
