The Maltese and Nigerian governments have signed a cooperation agreement that provides for the repatriation of migrants who have not been granted asylum status.

The agreement was signed at the EU-Africa Summit in Brussels between Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella and Nigerian Foreign Minister Aminu Wali.

In Malta, there are at present 155 Nigerian nationals who are awaiting repatriation. The agreement guarantees the safeguarding of the human rights of the repatriated migrants and specifies they will not be maltreated in any way on their return but will be re-integrated in a dignified manner.

Both sides also agreed the fight against criminal rackets organising human trafficking should be intensified.

During the summit, a plan of action on immigration and mobility was agreed upon as part of the strategic cooperation between the two continents.
