Malta managed to double its production and consumption of renewable energy in 2012 but is still Europe’s laggard, with a long way to go to reach its end-of-decade targets.

In that year Malta produced 1.4 per cent of all its energy from renewable sources, mostly from PV panels which mushroomed across the island thanks to an EU-funded scheme. That was double the 0.7 per cent registered in 2011.

This was the highest growth registered among EU member states but Malta is still at the bottom of the renewable energy rankings. The average consumption of renewable energy in the EU in 2012 stood at 14.1 cent.
