Family, friends and fans are marking the anniversary of Amy Winehouse’s death through interviews and musical tributes. The singer of Rehab, Back to Black, Love Is a Losing Game and Stronger Than Me was found dead at her North London home last year at the age of 27. An inquiry established that she died of alcohol poisoning.

I’m pretty sure she has come back as a butterfly, because she would love the freedom of flying

Even though a year has passed, the soul diva’s name has constantly made the headlines, thanks mostly to her father Mitch.

He has just published a memoir titled Amy: My Daughter, in which he talks about her struggles with drugs, alcohol and men.

In an interview he said he wanted “to tell the incredible story of the Amy the public never got to know and understand”.

This week the 60-year-old admitted he only realised how talented his daughter was after she died.

“I always knew she was a good singer, but I was so busy running after her and pulling her out of trouble and telling her off and taking her here, there and everywhere.”

Last month he revealed in an interview that he still sends text messages to his daughter’s phone, asking her to come home.

He also said he had not been able to scatter her ashes but that he had managed to replace the image in his head of her lifeless body with one of her laughing.

“I’ve still got her ashes and my mum Cynthia’s. At some point we’ll do something with them and they’ll be together.”

Mr Winehouse also announced that he sadly had to put his daughter’s three-bedroom property in Camden, North London – where the singer was found dead – up for sale.

He said: “It is empty and costing a fortune to secure it. Amy and I both worked on the house and she loved it so much.”

Meanwhile, her mother Janis gave an emotional interview to Britain’s Hello Magazine saying she sometimes wakes up crying.

She believes the singer is still with her in spirit: “I’m pretty sure she has come back as a butterfly, because she would love the freedom of flying.”

Her parents plan to mark the anniversary together with Jewish traditions such as prayers and by lighting a memorial (Yaghrzeit) candle for her.

As from yesterday, the Amy Winehouse Foundation, set up by Janis last September, is charity of the week for online auction firm eBay.

The organisation aims to help young people in Britain and abroad who struggle with addiction, ill-health, disability or financial disadvantage.

Amy Winehouse released her first album, Frank, in 2003, but three years later she shot to super-stardom with Rehab.

The song hit the top 10 in the UK and the US and her second album, Back to Black, shot to No. 1 and won her five Grammys, including best new artist, record of the year and song of the year.

The artist checked into rehab herself in 2008, 2009 and then again in 2011 and was often on the front pages of tabloids for her behaviour off-stage: fighting with fans, marriage problems and substance abuse.

Rumours of a follow-up to Back to Black buzzed in the music press for much of 2011. But in June that year she cancelled a European tour after a botched performance in Belgrade, Serbia.

Post-humously, the artist featured on a duets album with Tony Bennett and topped Britain’s album chart with Lioness: Hidden Treasures, a collection of alternative versions of classics, unreleased tracks and covers. The 12-track album provided the biggest weekly sales tally of Ms Winehouse’s career.
