The government this year intends to relaunch the concept of cooperative societies within the public service, Small Enterprises Minister Chris Cardona told Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi in reply to a PQ.

Mr Cardona said the Board of Cooperatives would be updating current schemes to be more relevant to modern-day realities. Public sector employees would be enticed to form cooperatives and the government would contribute towards their success.

An educational plan will be drawn up to make the cooperative model better known as an alternative enterprise. The plan will address students, traders, professionals and the public in general, even through close cooperation with local councils.
