Twenty Referees’ Academy students recently attended a three-day live-in, organised by the Malta FA Refereeing Department at the Seashells Resort Suncrest. An introduction by referees’ development officer Kevin Azzopardi was followed by a presentation on mental toughness from MFA president Norman Darmanin Demajo. Assistant referees’ specialist Philip Agius dealt with teamwork between match officials. Dorianne Caruana Bonnici gave a talk entitled ‘Nutrition for performance’ while MFA director of refereeing Adrian Casha focused on free-kick management. A practical session was held at the Sirens Stadium before the group attended the Division One derby between Senglea and St George’s. The second day was wrapped up with Academy Project leader Paul Caruana highlighting the steps to be followed when delivering a pre-match talk. The weekend concluded with an inspirational talk by wheelchair basketball coach Noel Aquilina.
