Filmmakers may benefit from up to 27 per cent in cash rebates if they feature Maltese cultural elements as the government embarks on a mission to boost the film industry.

According to new financial guidelines, post-production is also eligible for rebates, with a €150,000 cap per project.

In addition, the scheme has been extended to include international TV series and transmedia.

The new incentive scheme is subject to State aid approval from the European Commission.

Addressing a press conference to announce the revamped scheme, Film Commissioner Engelbert Grech said the cash rebate system would help Malta’s competitiveness and give producers better value for money. Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia, who is also responsible for the film industry, said the government wanted to further develop it to ensure the island offered the right tools and expertise for it to flourish.

The event also served to launch the new logo of the Malta Film Commission as part of a rebranding exercise, which will include an international marketing campaign.

A new comprehensive industry guide was also launched, showcasing Malta’s benefits for the film industry, together with data and testimonials.
