When still at school many years ago, Maltese and English were the languages we studied.

I remember well that teachers stressed the importance of writing and speaking each language in a correct and proper way. In order to reach that level we were very much encouraged to read, apart from the class textbooks, books and other material in each of the languages. The benefit is that when reading what the writer has to convey, expressing himself or herself in his or her native language, one comes across idioms, phrases and styles which may not be obtained otherwise. This is very important.

Apart from all that, reading broadens the mind and makes one a better person.
