This photo is one of the signs that used to calculate the distance from one place to another.
The letters VR are for Queen Victoria Regina. From one sign to the other, there used to be a distance of one mile.
Today such structures are rarely seen in Gozo.
One of these structures can be found near the entrance to the Mental Wing of the Gozo General Hospital. I can’t understand why this structure was placed there.
But what I can never understand is why the symbols VR are placed facing the fields. This is a real shame.
Would somebody care to relocate this structure, which is rare in Gozo due to the ‘development’ that has taken place? It should be placed somewhere more dignified so that it will be seen and admired by all of us and the generations to come.
