Schalke 04 boss Ralf Rangnick revealed he will field a different side for tomorrow’s Champions League semi-final against Manchester United after his team lost in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Schalke hopes of a morale-boosting win were dashed in a 1-0 home defeat to Kaiserslautern.

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who on Wednesday told the Royal Blues he will not renew his contract which expires at the end of next season, was beaten in the 42nd minute by Kaiserslautern’s Srdjan Lakic.

Rangnick is expected to revert largely to the side which beat holders Inter 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen in the quarter-finals on April 13 when his side host Manchester United.

Spanish playmaker Jose Jurado is expected to start, as will defender Benedikt Hoewedes – who scored the winning goal against Inter – after sitting out Saturday’s defeat with injury.

The midfield of Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Joel Matip, Alexander Baumjohann and Jurado is expected to face United after Rangnick named a totally different quartet against Kaiserslautern.

“I selected the Schalke team in such a way, because I wanted to win both of our upcoming games (against Kaiserslautern and United),” said Rangnick.

“In the Champions League, we will select a different team again.”

Meanwhile, Germany defender Christoph Metzelder hopes underdogs Schalke can catch United off-guard tomorrow.

With Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid contesting the other semi, Metzelder is hoping United are distracted by thoughts of a mouth-watering final against either Spanish side at Wembley in London on May 28.

“Our advantage is certainly that Manchester United will be busy thinking about facing either Real or Barcelona at Wembley in the final,” said the 30-year-old.

“We will definitely be looking to come up with something.”

Ex-Real Madrid defender Metzelder won the last of his 47 caps in the Euro 2008 final defeat at the hands of Spain and knows Schalke face an uphill task against United.

“It feels like they have been in the Champions League forever and have always reached at least the quarter-finals,” he said.
