Team Ramis are basically part of the Division One furniture, with their current, tried-and-tested line-up offering a wealth of top level competitive experience, both at home and abroad.

The championship-winning team currently boasts the talents of Mark Spiteri, Paul Baldacchino, John Balani, Joanna Attard and Ray Falzon Reale, with an important injection of ‘new blood’ in the form of Philip Gruppetta, an extremely promising youth bowler who has tirelessly worked his way up to the highest levels from the ranks of the Special Olympics bowling squad.

Ramis had a mediocre start to the 18-week long winter season, spending the first five weeks hovering on or just below the mid-table mark.

However, an impressive run of three consecutive 8-0 victories put the outfit right in among the top dogs, in third place behind okmalta.com and Bowlers on Strike.

There was no looking back for the title chasers from then on, and a flurry of big wins followed in the mid-section of the season, seeing Ramis scoop no fewer than 42 points from a total of 48 over six weeks, to occupy second place on 84 points, just six down on defending champions okmalta.com.

The resurgent Ramis then bagged a further two 100 per cent results while okmalta.com slipped to a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Rogantino’s, which, crucially closed the gap at the top.

okmalta.com and Ramis were now set for a two-week dogfight, tied on 106 points, an un-catchable 24 points clear of third place.

The penultimate matches saw the pair mirror each other with matching majority (6-2) wins.

By sheer coincidence, and some considerable irony, week 18’s final fixture list saw the pair face off in a title-deciding clash, the whole season coming down to that one, three-game encounter.

The first frames of the opening game provided a clear hint as to what was in store with Ramis winning with a huge 913-821 scoreline.

They didn’t have to wait too long to start celebrating, as they easily netted the second game 869-775 to seal the title.

okmalta.com’s final 798-862 had little relevance, the match ending 6-2 to Ramis, who claimed the league title with a four-point advantage (112-108).

New season

Ramis are already going great guns after the first week of the new league season, following a resounding 8-0 victory over newcomers Gladiators.

They share the top spot after the initial fixtures of the summer season with Fina, okmalta.com and Royal Shock.

Bowlers of the week: Justin Caruana Scicluna (Fina, 761); Tiziana Carannante (Turu’s Knights, 623).
