Reading about the Maltese population’s endemic weight issues is of no surprise to me at all.

Choice of lifestyle devoid of any physical activity coupled with atrocious dietary habits seems to fit the Maltese stereotype.

While it is indeed encouraging to learn that 11,000 people participated in the President’s fun run last Sunday, it would be far more constructive for one and all to dedicate just 30 minutes a day towards burning calories on aregular basis.

No need to invest in home gyms or equipment, such as elliptical trainers, treadmills or stationary bicycles. No need for fancy clothing and no need for monthly membership fees to visit a gym or hire a personal trainer.

I have always been puzzled at the lack of initiatives generated by schools and local councils in trying to combat obesity.

I find it demeaning and counterproductive to deny students the opportunity to exert their bodies as well as their minds at least three times a week.

How many schools are actively trying to address this serious and life-threatening issue during its infancy?

And how many local councils make it a priority to teach their senior citizens that it is never too late to start physical activity and organise activities to raiseawareness through educational programmes?
