Car-racing enthusiasts can experience a Maltese-built, Formula-style racing car at the Science in the City festival in Valletta on September 27.

The car, on display at City Gate, was built in 2007 and competed in Fiorano, Italy.

A new car, to be built over the next few months by another team of students, will compete in the International Formula Student competition in Silverstone, the UK.

Science in the City forms part of the pan-European Researchers’ Night, held every year to creatively engage with science in an entertaining way.

Brought together by the love of cars, engineering and passion, a group of University students set up the University of Malta Racing (UoMR) association. Members of this association will be at City Gate to talk to the public about the car’s design and how it works.

“We faced two challenges. Apart from being successful technically, the car also needed to be economically feasible to produce on a commercial scale,” the students said.

This daunting challenge entailed extensive research and development, bearing in mind that there are around 120 universities around the world that are taking part,” explained the team members.

By donating for a good cause, people will also be able to take part in Ride in a Supercar at Paqpaqli għall-Istrina in December.
