Naxxar Lions 0
Qormi 1

An early goal handed Qormi a vital win over leaders Naxxar Lions to move up to second in the Division One standings alongside Senglea.

Qormi’s success has certainly spiced up this year’s promotion race with the top six sides separated by only four points with only six matches to go.

The Yellow Blacks grabbed the all-important goal in the first attacking foray of the match after 10 minutes.

The Lions rearguard failed to clear Noah Ojuola’s delivery from a throw-in and Michael Camilleri pounced to hit home from close in.

Qormi continued to play the better football and on 20 minutes they almost added a second.

Ojuola connected to Camilleri’s cross but his header finished wide.

Naxxar finally came to life ten minutes from the break when a Jurgen Debono effort from outside the box ended wide.

On the restart, it was Qormi who threatened on 57 minutes.

Mark Barbara found Ojuola, who freed Darko Medic but the Serbian’s shot was saved by Omar Borg.

Qormi continued to show the better ideas and on 75 minutes they missed a golden opportunity to put the game to bed. From a Barbara corner, Ousmane Sidibe’s header hit the arm of Ryan Cassar, with referee Alan Mario Sant pointing to the spot. But from the resultant penalty, Medic hit wide.

Naxxar struggled to test the Qormi defence. Instead it was Ojuola who came close on 81 minutes but his effort was off target.
